Moondraam Ullaga Por is a Tamil action film written and directed by Sugan Kartthi. The film stars Sunil Kumar and Akhila Kishore in the lead roles, with cinematography handled by Dheva, edits by Richard and music composed by Ved Shankar.
SYNOPSIS: The tale of an Indian prisoner captured by the enemy camp, in a fictional futuristic war between India and China.
REVIEW: Straight away, the audience is reminded that it is the future. The film, set in 2025 and traces the story of the protagonist, Saravanan (newcomer Sunil Kumar), and Indian soldier held in captivity by the Chinese - their army headed by Lim Bai Huai (Singaporean actor Wilson Ng). What they need from him, is information on where their soldiers are being held hostage by the Indians. Being the patriotic Major General that he is, naturally, Saravanan thwarts their efforts.
The Chinese are at war with India because they apparently resent the growth of India, and therefore want to conquer and curb. Then begins the tale of the protagonist's journey, replete with helicopters and submarines (in the name of warfare), glimpses of corruption in the country (for the film has to have a message), and not to forget, the back story of the protagonist, which is peppered with romance. Indeed, it truly is the perfect setting for the Third World War.
Let's face it, bad CGI can botch up an otherwise promising film. However, with Moondram Ullaga Por, there is no need to blame the entire collapse of what could have been a potentially engaging film on CGI alone. The premise (screenplay and writing by director Sugan Kartthi), seems promising, but perhaps what this film lacks, is the necessary experience - be it in the direction or even the acting. Both Saravanan and Akhila prove that they are newcomers, struggling to give their best - an effort that can be forgiven. But what about Wilson Ng? His "acting" during certain scenes is downright hilarious - like the time he laughs villainously, as he tries to intimidate the protagonist while at the same time informing him of his plans of India domination, in a "world" war. Or when he produces his weapon of choice the electrochemical liquid bomb.
