Mahesh Babu is back and this time he has chosen an action film. Athiratha has a very contemporary and relevant subject. It is about the problem of fake marks cards and question papers. Babu has handled it like a pro and given a film that should get full marks at the box office.
Chetan plays the lead role and his character is that of a reporter. The reporter is waiting for a big ticket chance. But he has to confront a dangerous and mindblowing crime involving a gang. Using fake marks cards and certificates and using it for other illegal activities, a gang has amassed a large amount of money. Chetan unravels it. But he is caught in the whirlpool and has to save himself first. How he manages to expose the crime and at the same time save himself forms the rest of the story.
Athiratha is an action fuelled ride that takes the audience on a thrilling ride from the word go. Most of the first half is a romance story between Chetan and Latha Hegde. But once the issue of the gang and the fake degree certificates enter, it is an action packed thriller and suspense ride.
Chetan and Latha Hegde have done a good job. Kabir Duhan Singh plays the main villain in the film. He makes an impressive peformance. There is also good supporting cast in the form of Avinash, Achyuth and Sadhu Kokila.
The second half of the film is especially good with a number of twists and turns in the plot. Sadhu Kokila's son has made his debut as a composer in this film and there are two good melodies he has given. The various twists and turns in the story in the second half is a bit confusing for some but it reveals a very good command over the mystery element by the director.
Athiratha is a welcome break from the routine commercial films. It has a good story to boast of and makes you think for a change. Don't miss to watch this thriller.

At the same time, the original also drew flak for a rather delayed first half and some unnecessary songs in the film that hindered the thrill element in the film. While Athiratha has the thriller element intact, it also keeps the shortcomings of the original ensuring it is a rather too faithful remake.
The film begins on a jagged note and it only gains pace towards the interval. The same pace of the film continues after the interval, but there is an unnecessary item song that breaks that flow. This is also followed by a rather melodramatic build-up to the climax. The forcefully inserted comic track doesn't work, but the actual dose of laughter happens in the end when the intended irony hits hard. The only worry is that whether or not one has the patience to endure the run up to the end.
When it comes to performances, the good-looking lead pair of Chetan and Latha Hegde perform well. Kabir Duhan Singh has a menacing presence in the film and proves that he can be a good option for a villain in Sandalwood. The songs don't leave a mark like one expects them to in a Mahesh Babu film, but as expected of him, he has introduced a promising new face to the industry once again.
